Of course one could say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But that is just a tiny part the reason.
More importantly: what better design to choose for a redesign contest site, than the current design of the the site about to be redesigned? What better way to remain neutral? What better way to stay clear of any conflicts of interest?
Most importantly: It is fun to spoof such a well known website.
If you compare the two sites, you'll note that this is not a copy, but a representation of useit.com. Everything is carefully set a little bit off, but as we know that things that are made to look like things, often look more like things than things.
The aim is to make this redesign contest site feel more Nielsen than Nielsen himself.
